You’ve been using this technique for years and haven’t even noticed.
You can distinguish Soviet cinema from modern cinema from one frame. Moreover, it is not necessary to recognize the actors or remember the plot of the film. It’s enough just to turn on the TV, see the image – and it’s immediately clear what kind of film is in front of the viewer.
Of course, it is unlikely to determine the exact year. But the time period is easy. Although, it would seem, the voice acting, for example, in Gaidai’s comedies is not inferior to the current one, and the picture is high definition.
The period of the film’s creation is revealed by the details. Old movies have a certain style. The frame was framed with scrupulous precision, every line was perfected. Thanks to this, the pictures turned out to be verified, somewhat reminiscent of theatrical productions.
Now there is no such thing. A minimum of time is allotted for filming, directors are trying to save money, so genre uniformity has long been forgotten.
The color rendition also tells you what year the film was shot. Take the same comedies of Gaidai. There are many bright colors in the original “Prisoner of the Caucasus”. But they are not flashy. On the contrary, slightly muted. In the 2014 remake, the tones seem to be “turned up” to the maximum: this suggests that this is a remake.
