Here’s how much sleep you need each night to avoid getting type 2 diabetes

In addition to fatigue and lack of concentration, not getting enough sleep might increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. This is what reveals a recent study spotted on Sunday by Science Alert and relayed by our colleagues at Slate. This would especially be the case for people who sleep less than six hours per night.

To carry out their study, the researchers analyzed the lifestyle and medical follow-up of 247,867 adults over more than a decade. They attempted to establish a possible link between sleep duration and the onset of type 2 diabetes, also investigating whether a healthy diet reduced the effects of short sleep on diabetes risk.

The more sleep decreases, the higher the risk.

Through all of their analyses, scientists determined that by sleeping only five hours a day, the risk of being affected by type 2 diabetes increases by 16%. The risk for people who sleep only three to four hours would be 41% higher than that for those who sleep seven to eight hours.

How can we explain this link between the development of type 2 diabetes and lack of sleep? As Science Alert points out, previous studies have shown that sleep-deprived people often have an increase in inflammatory markers and free fatty acids in their blood. Sensitivity to insulin is then altered and this can lead to resistance to this hormone, which is essential for regulating blood glucose levels.

Another possible reason: People who don’t get enough sleep may experience disruptions to their body’s natural rhythm. This can interfere with the release of hormones like cortisol, glucagon, and growth hormones, which usually help keep blood sugar levels well balanced.
