If the great Sarah Vaughan had to choose a singer to reincarnate in, the choice would have to be the barely 24-year-old Samara Joy from New York City. She is strikingly reminiscent of the jazz icon who died in 1990, both vocally and in terms of her musical intelligence and her unerring aesthetic sense.
And indeed, Samara Joy’s career began by winning the Sarah Vaughan-International Jazz Vocal Competition 2019. From then on she has performed with the likes of Christian McBride and Bill Charlap. Just three years later, on September 16, 2022, she released her first album on Verve.
“Linger awhile” sounds like an ironic understatement when it comes to Samara Joy: this young singer, musician and gifted songwriter is here to stay.
