“Here the president does not dismiss judges”

10.03.2023

The presidents of Colombia and El Salvador returned to Twitter to launch accusations following a first exchange at the beginning of March.

President Nayib Bukele pointed out this Thursday (03.09.2023) to his counterpart from Colombia, Gustavo Petroto “attack” the “internal affairs” of The Savior and his person, in a new message exchange among the leaders, which included Nicolás Petro, son of the Colombian ruler.

Petro responded to Bukele with “everything is fine in my house” following the Salvadoran president wrote in Twitter that “he doesn’t understand his (Petro’s) obsession with El Salvador.”

“Here there is the presumption of innocence, a universal principle. Here the president does not remove judges or magistrates; he fights for a more autonomous and stronger justice (…) here in Colombia we deepen democracy (and) we do not destroy it,” he published. Petro.

In response, Bukele wrote: “Presumption of innocence? I imagine that he has never accused any opponent of his. Colombians will know if that is true or another lie, that he already seems to be addicted to them.” And he added: “Besides, it was you who attacked me ( once more) and our internal affairs; I didn’t even remember your existence.”

Initially Petro commented on a news from CNN in which it was pointed out that “prosecutors in New York alleged that high-ranking Bukele officials made a pact with the gangs. In exchange for better terms, the gangs will reduce the homicide rate to make it appear that their tough approach to crime was working.” .

“Better than making government agreements under the table is that Justice can make them on the table without deception and in search of Peace,” the Colombian president wrote this Thursday in Twitter. In response, Bukele published on the same social network: “Agree. First he accuses of inhumane treatment and now they talk regarding ‘better conditions'” and added “Also, I don’t understand his obsession with El Salvador.”

Likewise, the Salvadoran president asked: “Isn’t your son the one who makes pacts under the table and also for money?”, “Is everything okay at home?”

The exchange of messages started at the beginning of March following Petro stated in a government act: “the terrible photos – I can’t get into other countries – of the concentration camp in El Salvador, full of young people, thousands and thousands, imprisoned that gives you chills.”

The Colombian head of state was referring to the fact that the Bukele government transferred to the Terrorism Containment Center (CECOT), a maximum security prison for 40,000 prisoners, to 2,000 alleged gang members.
