Less than two months before the presidential election on February 25, the intense activity of candidates for candidacy is taking place within the Constitutional Council, where the admissibility of their files will be assessed. The deadline for submission is this Tuesday at midnight.

During the day yesterday, the media observed the presence of the representatives of Anta Babacar Ngom, Mary Teuw Niane, Mame Boye Diao, Ousmane Sonko, Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Mimi Touré among the “Seven wise.”

These representatives submitted to the Constitutional Council the necessary documents to make the candidacies of their respective leaders admissible. They will have to return in two days. Indeed, as Les Échos points out, the Constitutional Council has set December 28 as the date of the draw to determine the order of processing of candidacy files, a crucial moment. The newspaper notes that “all applicants for the candidacy would like to be among the first to go, because it is at this stage that the problem of duplicates (sponsorships) arises.”

He recalls that on the occasion of the 2019 presidential election, “there was some friction between Mimi Touré, who presented for Macky Sall, and Malick Gakou who presented for Idrissa Seck”. The files were processed according to the order of arrival, which had caused great disorder in front of the institution’s premises and caused strong tensions between the candidates’ staffs. The introduction of the draw should help avoid such a situation.
