They are the American Mary Kay Létourneau, who was a teacher, and Vili Fualaau, her student who was only 12 years old!
In interview with Urbania, Simon Boulérice explained that it was this story in particular that gave him the idea for Pet :
« All of this reminded me of a case that had deeply troubled me when I was young: the story of Mary Kay Letourneau. What is surprising in this story is that despite everything, the two individuals got married, had two children and made their life together, until the death of Mary Kay Letourneau in 2020. »
Unlike Chanelle and Sandrick, Mary Kay Letourneau was the sixth grade elementary school teacher at Fruit Mill when they started having sex. This criminal affair led Ms. Létourneau to prison. She served a 6-year sentence.
She was arrested in 1997 and pleaded guilty to two counts of child rape. While awaiting her sentence, Mary Kay Létourneau had a first child with Vili Fualaau. 8 months after being incarcerated, she gave birth to their second child. They were married until 2019. This photo of them was taken in 2006:
