Several doctors from Hebrew SeniorLife, an affiliate of Harvard University School of Medicine, observed 50 older adults during 11,000 individual nights of sleep.

According to the results of the study, reported by The New York Post, sleep was more efficient and restorative in the elderly when the room temperature varied between 20 and 25°C. The quality of sleep dropped drastically when it rose above 25 degrees. Experts also do not recommend a room that is too cold, since the quality of sleep might be affected.

The researchers also assessed the presence of another person in the bedroom. One individual’s preferences for room temperature might affect the other’s sleep, for example. Others decide to sleep alone altogether.

“There are benefits for some partners to sleeping apart,” Dr. Erin Flynn-Evans, consultant to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, told CBS News. “Studies show that when one partner has trouble sleeping, it can have negative consequences for the other partner.”

Eating and drinking late at night, consuming alcohol and drinking caffeine late in the day are other habits, named by experts, to avoid to get the best night’s sleep possible.
