The day following the unexpected death of lawyer Sebastien Courtoy, some were quick to try to succeed him in the defense of the accused Smail Farisi, appearing free at the trial of the Brussels attacks. What also creates tensions within the Brussels bar, the relatives of the famous criminal lawyer who died of cardiac arrest not understanding that we cannot even wait for his funeral to imagine such a succession.
It is the penalist Fabian Lauvaux who will therefore form a new duo with Michel Degrève. The latter hesitated for a long time before accepting this request and will therefore be Smail Farisi’s lawyer from this Monday, but not without forming a duo with the young rising criminal, Michel Degrève, associated until then with Sebastien Courtoy in this file, and many others besides.
“After a week of reflection, I contacted my colleague and friend Mr. Laquay, close to Sebastien Courtoy. We met with Mr. Degrève and immediately shared the same ideas and visions of the file. I will intervene this Monday at his side and we will be assisted by Me Steggmans and Servé”.
Fabian Lauvaux, from the Charleroi bar, has more than 45 assize courts. It was he who had released Léopold Storme and condemned the Belgian State for the accused Hassan Iasir, involved in the murder of the young policewoman Kitty. He had also obtained the acquittal and the release of the Belgian prosecuted at the trial of the Charlie Hebdo attacks.
For his part, Michel Degrève says he is delighted with this new collaboration which is thus being done in respect of the memory of his friend Sebastien Courtoy.
