A Apple revealed his long awaited virtual/augmented reality headset today, during the opening keynote of the WWDC23. After showing the possible use cases for the device, the company gave some details of its technical specifications.

In this sense, in addition to its external characteristics, the Apple Vision Pro is equipped with multiple sensors and powered by two main chips, one of which is already quite familiar: the M2which also equips Macs, and the unprecedented chip R1.

While the M2 chip — whose specifications are already known — is in charge of performing operations, enabling access to applications through the headset, the R1 chip is responsible for processing information from the device’s 6 sensors, as well as the 12 cameras and the 6 microphones.

In this way, how noticed by TechCrunchthe R1 chip uses all of the sensors built into the headset for precise head, hand and eye tracking along with 3D mapping — all in real time.

Apple claims that this data processing takes place in 12 milliseconds — 8x faster than the blink of an eye — pointing out that this will drastically reduce the motion sickness that affects many other augmented/virtual reality systems, since if the human eye detects any kind of delay when moving around with the headset on, the user may start to feel queasy and disoriented.

There is, however, a downside to having two processors inside the headset, as this increases battery drain. In this sense, Apple claims that the device has a battery life of just two hours on a single charge – even so, considering all the features of the headset, we are talking regarding quite an efficiency!
