Are you out for New Years this Saturday night? Two tips: take your umbrella and be careful on the roads because the rain will be heavy. The only small consolation: at midnight, when we will switch to 2023, it will be dry in Brussels and a large part of Wallonia, while Flanders will be sprinkled with a fine drizzle. But this remains to be confirmed.
We announce 40 liters per m² over 3 days
Because this last weekend of the year 2022 will be very rainy overall. “From December 31 to January 2, in 3 days therefore, it will fall on Brussels (Uccle) 40 liters of water per m², which corresponds to half of what normally falls in half a month of December (85 liters per m²)”, explains Luc Trullemans.
New Year’s Eve will be hot: 15 ºC in Brussels and 10 ºC in the upper Ardennes. At midnight, the wind should be blowing between 30 and 60 km/h. So beware of your fireworks, the rockets may deviate to the North.
The heat comes to us from the Maghreb
“This exceptionally hot weather is not due to climate change but is explained by the South-West currents which bring us the hot weather from the Maghreb, Portugal, Spain (where it is currently 20 ºC). Arriving home, these temperatures will drop to 15ºC, which is 9ºC above normal. We had already experienced this last winter, but it remains exceptional, ”analyzes the meteorologist.
Return of the cold around January 10
This thaw announced for the end of year celebrations does not mean that we are out of it for winter and the extreme cold. “In weather, there is often an oscillation effect. After the 3 weeks of cold snap that we experienced until December 18, we are experiencing 3 weeks of heat. There is a risk of falling into the great cold once more around January 10, then of experiencing mildness once more”, concludes Luc Trullemans who prefers not to venture into such distant forecasts.
