The Policlinico Agostino Gemelli Irccs in Rome is confirmed for the fourth time as the best hospital in Italy, according to the ranking drawn up by the American magazine Newsweek in collaboration with Statista Inc. A confirmation of excellence which is also found in the “world” ranking where the Twins rises to 35th place (it was 38th last year) that is, in the circle of the best international hospitals led once once more by Mayo Clinic di Rochester. There are 5 Italian hospitals in the world top 100 and 14 in the top 250. With the top 10 – excluding Gemelli – all being from the North (half in Lombardy).
The world top ten and the position of the Gemelli of Rome
To find the first Italian healthcare facility you have to scroll down the ranking to 35th place. This is where the Agostino University Hospital is positioned Twins Irccs of Rome, first tricolor flag in the 2024 ranking of the best hospitals in the world, drawn up by Newsweek magazine (annually starting from 2019), with the collaboration of Statista (a company that deals with statistics). This year, we read in the introduction to the ranking, the list includes data on 2,400 hospitals in 30 countries, including Italy. The data is organized by country, but a ranking of the top 250 hospitals is published, a list from which a top 10 is highlighted which stands out in particular “for the intriguing use of artificial intelligence to advance medical discoveries”, explain the promoters. The Belpaese remains out of this restricted Olympus of top healthcare facilities, which sees the United States in number 1 place Mayo Clinic of Rochester. The podium is all from overseas: second Cleveland Clinic (USA), third on Toronto General. Hospitals followed by: Johns Hopkins Hospital (Usa), Massachusetts General Hospital (USA). The first European reality meets in sixth place, it is the German one Charité – University Medicine of Berlino. Behind him: Karolinska University Hospital (Stockholm, Sweden); AP-HP – Pitié Salpêtrière University Hospital (Paris, France); Sheba Medical Center (Ramat Gan, Israel); closes the top 10Zurich University Hospital (Zurich, Switzerland).

How the world ranking is created
But how is the ranking drawn up? Each hospital’s score is based on an online survey of more than 85,000 medical experts and public data from post-hospitalization surveys on overall patient satisfaction. The score also considers parameters such as hygiene, the doctor-patient relationship, as well as a survey by Statista on hospitals’ use of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), which are standardized questionnaires completed by patients to evaluate their experience and results. «The primacy of the Gemelli Polyclinic is a source of great satisfaction for us – comments the President of the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Polyclinic Foundation, Carlo Fratta Pasini –. The strength of the Gemelli Polyclinic lies in its history and its mission as a hospital at the service of everyone, which combines cutting-edge care and research, but also the training of doctors and healthcare workers.” «The results of the new Newsweek ranking make us truly proud to be at the helm of this reality of excellence, a non-profit foundation that re-invests all its resources for continuous improvement, and also proud to be an integral part of the healthcare service of the Lazio Region”, he continues Marco Elefanti general director of Gemelli which this year celebrates its first 60 years of activity
