Illinois Deputy Charged with Murder in Shooting of Unarmed Black Woman
A tragic incident in Springfield, Illinois, has resulted in the indictment of a sheriff’s deputy for the murder of an unarmed Black woman. Sean Grayson, a 30-year-old deputy with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. The charges stem from the shooting death of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old woman who called 911 to report a prowler near her home on July 6th.
According to prosecutors, Grayson and another deputy responded to Massey’s call and entered her home to investigate. While inside, Grayson allegedly became agitated over a pot of heated water on the stove, which Massey was attempting to remove to prevent a fire. Despite being in a safe position and at a distance from Massey, Grayson allegedly pulled out his gun and threatened to shoot her. Massey, fearing for her life, put her hands in the air and pleaded with Grayson, but he continued to advance towards her. She then grabbed the pot and threw out the water. In response, Grayson allegedly fired three shots at Massey, striking her once in the face.
The other deputy, who had turned on his body camera upon arriving at the scene, was allegedly told by Grayson not to attempt to save Massey following the shooting. The deputy, however, provided aid until paramedics arrived. Massey was transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The Illinois State Police conducted an investigation into the shooting, and a use of force expert determined that Grayson’s actions were not justified. The expert compared the incident to an officer intentionally putting himself in harm’s way and then using excessive force to justify his actions. Prosecutors argued that Grayson’s disregard for his training and human life posed a danger to the community.
Grayson was fired from his position following the indictment and denied bond by a judge. He is currently being held at the Menard County Detention Facility. He faces a life sentence if convicted on the murder charge.
