Tragedy Strikes Newport Beach: Woman Killed During Robbery
A peaceful followingnoon in Newport Beach turned tragic on Tuesday as a 68-year-old woman visiting from New Zealand was robbed and killed outside the Fashion Island mall. The victim, identified as Patricia McKay, was walking with her husband near Santa Rosa Drive and Newport Center Drive around 3:30 p.m. when two men approached them, attempting to rob them. One of the suspects was allegedly armed with a handgun.
A struggle ensued, and the suspects dragged McKay into the street. A third man, driving a white Toyota Camry, then struck and killed McKay during the course of the robbery. One of the men fired a gun three times during the incident.
Witnesses described hearing three to four gunshots before taking cover. Shoppers were left in shock and disbelief as they encountered a crime scene and a dead body where they had expected a routine shopping trip.
The three suspects fled the scene, leading police on a pursuit that extended onto the northbound 405 Freeway and into Los Angeles County. The car eventually stopped in Cypress, where one of the suspects exited the vehicle. The car continued driving into a neighborhood in South Gate, where aerial footage captured the remaining suspects running from the car, with one hiding behind trash cans.
All three men were apprehended and arrested. They were identified as Joseph McCrary Leroyernest, 26, of Compton; Jaden Cunningham, 18, of Lancaster; and Edward Darnell Malachi, 18, of Los Angeles.
The incident has shaken the community, with many expressing shock and grief over the senseless loss of life. Newport Beach City Mayor Will O’Neill, describing the area as typically safe, expressed his horror and fury over the tragedy.
