Herbert Wigwe: Remembering a Visionary Leader and Philanthropist

Herbert Wigwe, the Managing Director of Access Holdings Plc, tragically lost his life on February 9, 2024, in a helicopter crash in California, close to the border with Nevada, United States. The accident also killed his wife and only son.

According to the New York Times, search operations revealed no survivors until Saturday morning. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the accident involving a Eurocopter EC130 occurred near Nipton, California, located regarding 60 miles south of Las Vegas in eastern San Bernardino County, USA. around 10 p.m. local time.

Wigwe started his career at Coopers & Lybrand, Lagos, as a management consultant, later becoming a chartered accountant. After a stint at Capital Bank, he joined GTBank where he spent over a decade working in corporate and institutional banking, eventually becoming an executive director in charge of institutional banking.

In 2002, Wigwe and his partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, bought what was then a small commercial bank, Access Bank – at the time, the 65th largest of the country’s 89 banks. Over the years, Access Bank has become one of the five largest banks in Nigeria and ranked among the top 500 global banks according to a 2015 report by The Banker magazine and aims to become the leading bank in Africa.

It currently serves over 6.5 million account holders, through 350 branches and over 1,500 ATMs in major centers across Nigeria, sub-Saharan Africa and the United Kingdom.

Wigwe also served as Chairman of Access Bank Ghana Limited, Access Investment & Securities Limited, Central Securities and Clearing System (CSCS) and was at the time of his death Chairman of Access Bank (UK) Limited. He was a board member of the Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company and a member of the advisory board of Friends Africa. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN – FCA), a Fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration and an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
