Cheongnoe Oriental Medicine Clinic confirmed through cell experiments that certain herbal medicine ingredients suppress brain nerve inflammation, a major cause of dementia. Cheongnoe Oriental Medicine Clinic has already developed ‘Cheongnoe-tang’, which is effective in treating dementia, and is prescribing it to patients. Lee Jin-hyuk, CEO of Cheongnoe Oriental Medicine Clinic, said, “I believe that if we add this medicinal herb with confirmed efficacy to the existing Cheongnoe-tang, the proportion of patients whose dementia can be improved or whose dementia symptoms can be maintained from worsening will increase.”

◇ Herbal medicine ingredients that suppress brain inflammation, proven through research

‘Experimental Substance A’, a herbal medicine ingredient discovered by Cheongnoe Oriental Medical Clinic to suppress nerve inflammation through cell experiments, contains polyphenol. Polyphenols inhibit oxidative stress that damages cells. In fact, the antioxidant activity of experimental substance A was found to be 361.3% of that of the commonly used standard antioxidant ‘Trolox’. In addition, experimental substance A ▲ inhibits the production of ‘TNF-a’, a substance that causes inflammation in the brain, ▲ increases IL-10, a substance that reduces inflammation, and ▲ ‘HT-22 neurons’, the brain hippocampal cells responsible for memory, It was confirmed to induce proliferation and inhibit brain nerve cell death caused by the toxic substance amyloid beta. It has also been shown to reduce brain nerve damage by affecting microglial cells (immune cells present in the brain). When microglial cells are first generated, they are divided into ‘M1 phenotype’ and ‘M2 phenotype’. The M1 phenotype promotes brain inflammatory damage caused by dementia, while the M2 phenotype has a neuroprotective effect. As a result of the cell experiment, it was revealed that experimental substance A increased the M2 phenotype among microglial cells. CEO Lee Jin-hyuk said, “The cell test results for experimental substance A came out much better than expected,” and added, “We plan to conduct additional in-depth research and publish it in an international journal.”

The dementia treatment effect of Cheongnoe-tang developed by Cheongnoe Oriental Medical Clinic has already been published in the SCI international academic journal ‘Alzheimer’s Disease Journal’ in May 2021. Cheongnoe Oriental Medicine Clinic and the Neuropsychiatry Department of Dongguk University Oriental Medicine Hospital conducted preclinical tests to prove its effectiveness. Accordingly, Cheongnoe Oriental Medicine Clinic has been prescribing Cheongnoe-tang to patients since 2021. Cheongnoe Oriental Medical Clinic surveyed a total of 213 dementia patients who took Cheongnoe-tang for more than 6 months between January 2022 and May 2023, and found that 97 (45.5%) improved and 83 (38.9%) maintained their condition. . Of the total 45 patients with mild cognitive impairment (pre-dementia), 26 (57.7%) improved and 14 (31.1%) remained. In addition, more than 80% of patients with forgetfulness, chronic headaches, and insomnia showed significant improvement. It is recommended to take Cheongnoe-tang for at least 6 months, but the treatment effect appears within 3 months at the earliest.

Meanwhile, treatment for dementia must be started quickly in the early stages of onset or in the pre-dementia stage of mild cognitive impairment in order to prevent or improve symptoms from worsening. When symptoms are suspected, it is recommended that you get tested for dementia or take a simple memory test. All you have to do is listen to 5 completely unrelated words (for example, red, hat, school, handkerchief, umbrella) and remember them following 5 minutes. If three or more are incorrect, you may have mild cognitive impairment. Continuing to give wrong answers when subtracting 7 from 100 may also be a sign of mild cognitive impairment. When entering the dementia stage, the basic symptom is short-term memory impairment. They can’t remember what they just said, so they repeat the same words and questions.

◇”Incurable diseases can be treated with herbal medicine… “We will prove it”

Due to the high level of social awareness regarding oriental medicine treatment, many people have doubts regarding the fact that dementia can be treated with oriental medicine. Director Lee Jin-hyuk said, “The effectiveness of Cheongnoe-tang has been proven through experiments, and we can see with our own eyes that symptoms are improving by taking herbal medicine while looking at actual patients.” He added, “This time, experimental substance A has been newly proven to suppress inflammation in brain nerves. “We believe it will be effective when applied to humans,” he said. CEO Lee Jin-hyuk said, “Cheongnoe Oriental Medicine Clinic will scientifically prove that it is possible to treat incurable diseases such as dementia with herbal medicine, and continue to accumulate and publish actual clinical data to further expand the potential and role of the Oriental medicine market.”
