“Kino pavasaris” presented both “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest”, in which S. Hüller creates the role of Hedwig, the wife of Auschwitz concentration camp commandant Rudolf Höss, who enjoys a good life. Both films are currently showing in Lithuanian cinemas.
Way to success
Born in Zühl, Thuringia, the actress S. Hüller will turn 46 this month – it seems that she is currently in her prime. Although maybe they are still ahead? A woman who joined a drama club as a teenager, then studied acting in Berlin in 2006. made her debut in compatriot Hans-Christian Schmidt’s Requiem, for which she won the best actress award at the 56th Berlin Film Festival, and later successfully worked on the German theater stage.
In 2013, the actress received another important recognition – for her role in Maren Ade’s comedy “Toni Erdmann” she was awarded the statuette of the European Film Awards, but only the first one on the list. Once once more, this award was given to S. Hüller for her role in the “Anatomy of a Fall” by the already familiar director Justine Triet – for which the German was also nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA statuette.
At the British film awards, the woman was also nominated for the best supporting actress award for “Zone of Interests”, and at the European ones… she fought with herself. Although, as one of the most respected and at the same time the most desired representatives of her generation in Germany claims, competition in art is generally not understood.
An awkward role
Speaking to The Guardian, the German does not hide that she did not want to take on the role offered to her. “I have seen too many of my compatriots playing Nazis in banal historical dramas – besides, I am not fascinated by violence and cruelty.” She does not hide that she is a very psychological actress, but in this case she did not delve into the psychology of a Nazi criminal, nor did she want to collect any more detailed information regarding this woman.
Although the actors, located in a house near the Auschwitz concentration camp turned into a museum, were not disturbed by the sound of the film, for which the team was awarded an Oscar, and the location was not original (another family lives in the real Höss house), filming was a difficult challenge for everyone. In order to be authentic, the director hid the cameras, so the process resembled a reality show. True, it was possible to call for help “from abroad” – the pet of the Höss family is played by a real dog of S. Hüller in the film.
It is interesting that in the film “Anatomy of the Cross”, in which S. Hüller played the main role of a writer accused of the death of her husband, she tried with the director Justine Triet to find out whether she is guilty or not, because she usually creates from a sense of empathy. Historical facts clearly show that Hedwiga Höss was well aware of what her husband was doing at “work” behind the fence of her garden. According to the actress, this woman simply never took a good look at herself.
Thus, “Zone of Interests”, showered with international awards, is a film regarding the phenomenon of ignorance, which is characteristic of the societies of various countries even today. “We tend to turn off the most diverse information that can interfere with a peaceful life. Unfortunately, it is so easy…”, she told the Latvian film critic Dita Rietum in an interview published in the magazine “Kino raksti”. It was the realization of what this film was really regarding that led her to accept the challenge of director Jonathan Glazer.
