The Exgovernor Henrique Capriles rejected on Monday the possibility that the primaries that the Venezuelan opposition will hold on October 22, that will define the adversary that will compete against Chavismo in the 2024 presidential become a process “VIP” that excludes those who live in impoverished areas.
The politician, two-time presidential candidate in Venezueladelivered a document to the National Commission of Primaries (CNP) in which proposes to use 4,012 polling stations to guarantee the right to vote to “the great majorities”, especially the poorest citizens living in remote communities.
“Either it’s a primary for everyone, or it’s a VIP primary. We do not want a VIP primary, we want a primary where the poorest in our country, who live in the popular sectors of our country, have the opportunity to participate.”he said at a press conference.
For this reason, he proposed CNP activate 6,900 polling stations to cover a large number of neighborhoods in all the municipalities of the country.
“4,000 is not the same as 100 (electoral) centers. It is very important that Venezuelans who feel most abandoned (participate)”he stressed.
When asked about the date on which he will deliver the requirements to the CNP to make his candidacy official – a process that will close this Friday – he said that he will do so after receiving a response to his proposals, which, he assured, are not pressures or conditions.
“We want to know what kind of primary we are going to have (…) If this is a VIP primary (…), we will have to give the decision to announce our position, we do not agree with a VIP primary“, he insisted.
The former governor reiterated his support for the CNP to organize self-managed primaries, after dispensing with the request for help from the National Electoral Council (CNE) due to the resignation of the majority of its authorities.
Minutes later, the CNP assured through Twitter that “He will respond in a timely manner” to Capriles’ recommendations and “to those submitted by any other applicant.”
