If a nightmare streak is to be broken, you might as well do it in style.
HV71 did it by turning 0–2 into 3–2 at home against Örebro.
– I just want the boys to enjoy themselves, says HV71’s coach Anton Blomqvist in TV4 Play.
HV71 breaks the nightmare streak after victory in extra time
It was probably the occasional stone that fell from the occasional shoulder when Henrik Borgström sent in 3-2 in extra time.
The Finn’s second goal of the evening not only gave the SHL’s biggest crisis team a long-awaited victory. It put an end to a streak of six straight losses and afterwards the team was praised by the victory-hungry supporters in Husqvarna Garden.
– The last few weeks have been incredibly difficult for us as a team. It’s easy to get into a vicious spiral, but it was nice to play at home today and get that help from the crowd. It was our turn today, says Anton Blomqvist.
Two goals in 99 seconds
Örebro had the command in the first period but HV71 managed to keep the score intact.
But with a little less than four minutes left in the middle period, it started to trickle away.
Örebro’s Patrik Karlkvist had just come out of the penalty box when he served Patrik Puistola, who made it 1-0 for the visitors.
99 seconds later, 2–0 came through Christopher Mastomäki and HV71 took a timeout.
It produced the desired effect.
Double full hits by Borgström
Slowly but surely the HV71 began to find its way and create more and more. Early in the third period, new acquisition Jonathan Ang also put the puck down.
And finally there was a receipt.
With Örebro’s Robin Norell in the penalty box, Henrik Borgström scored 2-2 and the match went to extra time.
There, Borgström stepped forward and decided.

(Jimmy Carr voice) Ah, a sporting match, how thrilling. I mean, it’s not as if I’d rather be watching paint dry. Although, I’m not sure what’s more tedious, the actual sport or the names of the teams involved. HV71? Örebro? Sounds like a couple of IKEA furniture collections. (chuckles)
(Rowan Atkinson voice) Now, let’s get to the exciting part, shall we? Henrik Borgström, the hero of the hour, or should I say, the hero of the extra time? (smirking) I mean, who doesn’t love a good extra time goal? It’s like the sporting equivalent of a surprise party. “Surprise! We’re still playing!”
(Ricky Gervais voice) Oh, the pressure must have been immense for poor old HV71. Six straight losses, and I’m sure the fans were just delighted to be watching their team disappoint them time and time again. I mean, who doesn’t love a good underdog story, eh? “Come on, HV71, you can do it! Or, you know, not.” (laughs)
(Lee Evans voice) And then, the coach, Anton Blomqvist, comes out and says, “I just want the boys to enjoy themselves.” Ah, bless him. It’s like he’s talking about a bunch of lads on a stag do. “Lads, just have a good crack, you know, score a few goals, get the fans on their feet… and, you know, try not to lose seven in a row.” (laughs)
(Jimmy Carr voice) Two goals in 99 seconds, you say? That’s like me coming up with two decent jokes in a row. (laughs) Unlikely, but I suppose it can happen. And Patrik Puistola, what a name! Sounds like a Finnish try-hard. “I’m Patrik Puistola, and I’m here to score goals and take names… and possibly fix your IKEA bookshelf.” (chuckles)
(Rowan Atkinson voice) Oh, the drama of it all! The HV71 team taking a timeout, and then… and then… they actually start playing. What a plot twist! (smirking) I bet the scriptwriters were on the edge of their seats when they wrote this thriller.
(Ricky Gervais voice) And Jonathan Ang, the new acquisition, popping up to score a goal. Ah, the transfer market, always a bit of a gamble. Like buying a timeshare in Benidorm. (laughs) You never know what you’re going to get.
(Lee Evans voice) Henrik Borgström, the man of the hour, scoring the equalizer and then the winner in extra time. What a bloke! I bet he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve. Maybe he’s got a few sneaky skills, like being able to eat a whole pizza by himself in one sitting. (laughs) Yeah, that’s the kind of hero we can all get behind.
(Jimmy Carr voice) Well, there you have it, folks, the thrilling tale of HV71’s breakout game. I hope you were on the edge of your seats. (smirks) Or not.
