Overcoming Adversity: Henk Lategan Ready to Conquer the Dakar Rally
From Devastation to Determination
Henk Lategan’s road to the 2024 Dakar Rally has been anything but straightforward. A dislocated shoulder, a repeat of a rare injury he first experienced during his Dakar debut in 2021, sidelined him last year, forcing him to observe from the sidelines as his competitors tackled the demanding race. “It was a terrible realization,” Lategan reflected, recalling the agonizing five months of surgery and recovery. “The surgeon told me it was such an unusual injury — he had only seen it three times in 20 years.” The injury was a colossal setback, impacting not only his physical well-being but also chipping away at his confidence.
A Triumphant Return
Lategan’s return to racing was a mix of trepidation and determination. While the first race back brought several positive signs — “After the first lap we were almost three minutes ahead,” he shared, “I found I could still drive, but it wasn’t 100%” — Lategan knew the journey back to the top would take relentless effort. He dedicated himself to months of intense training, which paid off in spades. Partnered with navigator Brett Cummings, he dominated the South African Rally Raid Championship, securing four wins from six events. Winning wasn’t just about regaining his place among the elite, it was about proving to himself that he could handle the pressures of international competition once more.
Focusing on the Dakar Prize
All eyes are now on the 47th Dakar Rally, and Lategan’s hunger to compete burns brighter than ever. Leading the charge for Toyota Gazoo Racing’s South African contingent, he’ll be joined by Guy Botterill, Saood Variawa and rally veteran Giniel de Villiers. The team is further bolstered by Toyota’s European-based W2RC teams, comprising Seth Quintero and Lucas Moraes – a formidable six-car Hilux setup that makes a strong statement. Despite the fact the Hilux DKR T1+ is nearing the end of its development cycle, Lategan remains optimistic.
“We’ve learned every year, and now it’s about putting a whole race together,” he shared. “Dakar is so mentally demanding – after the rest day you’re only halfway home.”
Learning From the Past, Meeting New Challenges
The transition from the high-speed GPS-navigated world of the South African championship to the intricacies of the Dakar presents unique obstacles. “In the South African championship, you always know you are on the right path. In the Dakar, a deviation of 20 meters can be costly,” Lategan notes, highlighting the incredible precision and patience required.
The Dakar is a beast of its own, constantly evolving, with new competitors and ever-changing terrain. This year promises a new batch of challenges, but at 29 years young, Lategan is emboldened. His journey isn’t just about reclaiming his position; it’s about cementing his legacy. “For me, simply reaching the starting line is a victory, but my ambitions go far beyond just taking part,” Lategan declared. With two stage wins already under his belt, he’s ready to leave no stone unturned: “The competition is tough, but we have prepared well. I’m ready to push and prove myself.” All eyes will be on Lategan as he navigates the unforgiving Saudi Arabian desert. This isn’t just a race; it’s a testament to his resilience, a testament to his unwavering spirit, and a chance to solidify his place among rallying’s greats.
