“Hemochromatosis: A High Iron Blood Disease that Risks Pancreas and Liver Health – Dr. Hossam Mowafi’s Warning”

Dr. Hossam Mowafi, Professor of Critical Cases at Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine, warned of a very dangerous disease that negatively affects the health of the pancreas and liver.

Mowafi said during his program, “My Lord, Increase Me in Knowledge,” broadcast on Sada Al-Balad channel, that the disease he is referring to is “hemoglobin,” indicating that it results from a high level of iron in the blood.

The professor of critical care medicine explained that a change in the skin to a bronze color is a warning sign of hemochromatosis.

He stressed that the seriousness of this disease lies in the diseases it causes to the pancreas and liver, because iron in excess of the body’s need is usually deposited in them.

He added: “When iron is deposited in the pancreas, the risk of developing diabetes increases, because the beta cells in it stop producing the hormone insulin, which is responsible for controlling blood sugar levels.”

As for the liver, Muwafi revealed at the end of his speech that iron deposition puts it at risk of failure and cancerous tumors.
