Fidesz in Budapest
Written by Rainer Ackermann
“We are freeing Budapest from the captivity of Ferenc Gyurcsány.” With these words, Alexandra Szentkirályi, the leading candidate of the governing parties for the mayoral elections in Budapest, started the election campaign on Wednesday evening.
The former government spokeswoman said it was time to turn off the power to the Gyurcsány show in the capital. Today Ferenc Gyurcsány has a mayor, only the citizens of Budapest don’t have one. Mayor Gergely Karácsony described her as a “busy servant in the villa” of the ex-prime minister and DK boss, and the town hall as the setting for a Brazilian soap opera.
Conservatives know how to run Budapest well
Referring to the term of office of the independent mayor István Tarlós, Alexandra Szentkirályi explained that the conservatives had already proven how Budapest can be run well. Her election promises include ending corruption in the town hall, curbing the sprawling bureaucracy, eliminating traffic chaos, ensuring order and cleanliness in the city, making Budapest livable once more and helping it return to its true greatness.
Once the town hall is freed from the opposition, cooperation between the capital and the government will be possible once more, entirely in the interests of the residents of Budapest. Regarding the traffic chaos, Szentkirályi said that drivers, cyclists and local transport users should no longer be played off once morest each other. To this end, buses and trains will run more frequently, free but guarded P+R parking spaces will be set up in the outskirts and money will be invested in renewing the road network. The city cleaning budget would be doubled, the city would be cleared of graffiti and the homeless would be banned from the cityscape, as was the case before 2019.
Tarlós: “She overlooks the field”
Former mayor István Tarlós (two terms in office from 2010 to 2019) praised the leading candidate of the governing parties as “humane and decent” and a politician who “overlooks the field”. Alexandra Szentkirályi brings the necessary wealth of experience for municipal affairs, as she has been a member of the Budapest parliamentary group of Fidesz-KDNP since 2010 and was part of his closest team as deputy mayor from 2014. “What the current mayor promises, he cannot keep. What Alexandra Szentkirályi promises is based on reality,” Tarlós made a comparison.
