With winter setting in, many children find themselves without warm clothing. For some families, buying a good coat or fur-lined shoes is simply impossible.
In Brussels, these families can fortunately ask for help from associations, such as Solidarité Grand Froid. Several times a week, this Saint-Gilles association distributes clothes to the homeless, but also to families in great difficulty. Everyone is entitled to a few items of clothing out of the 1000 tonnes received each year which must be sorted and distributed.
The volunteers are faced with families in extremely precarious situations, such as mothers who have just left the maternity ward and who come directly to their home to dress the baby who has nothing. Every winter, Solidarité Grand Froid helps 5,000 people in need and the president of the association, Cynthia Simpson, witnesses it, families with children are more and more numerous: “We try to restore dignity, so that children are not too sidelined, stigmatized when they go to school“.
