Residents say flooding in far north Hartford, Connecticut, has been especially bad recently, but it’s a long-standing problem that leaders say has no easy fix.

“We have a storm sewer system, not just here in Hartford, not just in the Hartford region, but across the state and probably across the country that is built for a different era, and what that means is that with Too often we are going to see that system overwhelmed by these increasingly severe and frequent storms,” Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin said.

Hartford’s new Flood Compensation Program tries to help as many people as possible as the state and the Metropolitan District Commission work to fix infrastructure problems in the area.

“This announcement today is not about a solution to the problem, it is about relief for those affected by the problem,” Bronin said.

On Thursday, state leaders provided details about how the $5 million program will work.

“We’re talking about a problem that’s been going on for years, so we know this isn’t a silver bullet, but we know it’s a start,” said Blue Hills Civic Association Executive Director Vicki Gallon-Clark.

Beginning September 1, Hartford residents or business owners can apply for flood assistance for storm damage that occurred from January 1, 2021 through now and beyond.

“Once we can determine that someone is eligible, meaning that they are a Hartford resident and own property here or a business here, Dr. Rhule will approve it, and within 30 days of doing so it will be done. an inspection,” said State Comptroller Sean Scanlon.

Said inspection will be carried out by an authorized adjuster, with the help of the Metropolitan District Commission. Scanlon said people can select their own adjuster, as long as they are licensed by the Department of Consumer Protection.

Scanlon says the process takes about 60 days and there is no limit to how much a person can receive. At this time, they estimate that approximately 1,000 people need assistance.

Those wishing to apply can do so online, in person or by mail with the help of the Blue Hills Civic Association, which administers this program. You can find more information on how to apply here.
