Three pictures by Gottfried Helnwein can now be seen in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. The artist, who was born in Vienna and who says he has a strong Catholic background, presented his three large-format depictions in the form of a triptych in the chancel of the cathedral on Tuesday together with cathedral priest Toni Faber. A triptych refers to a three-part work of art. For example, it consists of three paintings or panels, which in some versions are connected by hinges and can therefore be opened and closed. In his work, Helnwein processed the central Christian statements of faith regarding Jesus’ death, his resurrection and the sending of the Spirit at Pentecost.
