AALBORG:AaB upgraded in the winter transfer window in the quest to avoid relegation from the Super League. Part of that build-up consisted of bringing Nicklas Helenius home to Aalborg.
But the switch back to AaB, where Helenius had played for two seasons before and received his football education, almost ended up coming to nothing. Silkeborg IF asked for a large sum for the striker, which did not go down well with the high North Jutland.
Nicklas Helenius tells this in the latest edition of North Jutland’s football podcast, Ripodsten.
– It was a rather tedious negotiation with Silkeborg. They had once blocked something that I wanted, even though we had an agreement that they wouldn’t have to following a year and a half if everything went well. There they were once more a bit boring, and I was quite disappointed by that. So we actually told AaB to withdraw because we didn’t think it was fair what Silkeborg wanted for me there, says Helenius
– But AaB wanted it so much, and I myself wanted it so much, that we stretched a bit on both sides, and it might be done. It was the right thing for me.
A crazy unrealistic amount
In the summer transfer window, there was also interest in Nicklas Helenius following he became the top scorer in the Super League in the 2021/2022 season. At the time, he had also considered a move away from Silkeborg, but it never came to fruition.
– It was both abroad and in Denmark. When you become the top scorer in the Superliga, there are many doors that open. There were many things that I wanted, and I had no understanding that they stood in the way. I won’t say the amount, but they came up with a crazy unrealistic amount for me, so I mightn’t go, even though we had a handshake agreement that they wouldn’t stand in the way. It was a huge disappointment, he says.
Instead, the super league top scorer stayed in Silkeborg IF through the autumn, before the switch to AaB took place in the winter transfer window.
Funny remark went on
AaB’s interest in Nicklas Helenius began to sprout during the autumn. Here, a funny remark towards AaB’s goalkeeping coach, Poul Buus, played a central role in the beginning dialogue regarding the striker’s return to Aalborg.
– I had heard that there was some interest. The last match I played for Silkeborg once morest AaB, where we won 2-1, I had a little chat with some. I have always done that. I have always felt welcome up here. There I got to talk to Buus a bit, and I jokingly said that they should call if I had to come and help. He obviously passed this on to Thomas Bælum straight away, and already something came of it, says Helenius.
– It was meant to be fun, but also because the heart was there, and I might see how affected AaB was. That feeling of meeting AaB at a fort was not there, he adds.
