Hélène Segara suffers from an unknown illness which gradually makes her blind. She talks regarding her fight which makes her want to live “intensely” in the present.
Hélène Segara suffers from an unknown illness which is gradually making her blind, she revealed on Sunday May 5 in the show Sept à Huit. “I still don’t know what I’m fighting once morest, but I try everything,” explains the singer who had already revealed in 2021 that she suffered from a rare eye disease, macular degeneration.
“In April 2013, I came back from Russia where I had worked and I woke up one morning with a curtain literally in front of my eyes and not understanding what was happening to me. From there, everything happened. I “I had implants in my eyes, I had a total of twenty interventions”, says the singer revealed by Notre Dame de Paris.
“It wasn’t small doses”
In 2022, the situation changes for the worse. “I realized that I was really losing one of my eyes.” Operated urgently, she avoids going blind. While she is on cortisone to keep up, the artist sees “on the networks a lot of questions regarding (her) physical changes.”
“They weren’t small doses,” she remembers. “It was 1000 milligrams. So obviously, I arrived in a normal state, I came out, I was popcorn.”
“Squints that I mightn’t control”
On a daily basis, Hélène Segara must adjust to an environment that is often aggressive to her vision. “From the moment we lose our sight, our eyes desperately seek light,” she explains. “So there were a few televisions where I ended up with squints that I mightn’t control.”
Because of these appearances on television, the singer claims to have been “harassed”: “And on the networks, people are violent… That’s also why at one point I went abroad because I didn’t want to be followed, harassed, because I was followed right up to the hospital gates.
Faced with this incurable illness, Hélène Segara now wants to live the present “intensely”: “It’s the lesson of what’s happening to me.” And added: “(I want) to enjoy every moment, to love a lot, to eat delicious things, to cook for those I love. I want to see everything, watch everything while I can.”
Hélène Segara announced in February 2022 on her Instagram account her decision to limit her tour due to her health problems. “My new treatment being long and tiring, it would unfortunately be unreasonable and exhausting for me to have too many concerts in the same week.”
