The paper producer Heinzel, which also includes the plants in Laakirchen and Steyrermühl, achieved sales of 2.2 billion euros in 2023. In 2022 it was 2.7 billion euros. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were 116.5 million euros (2022: 287.5 million euros). CEO Sebastian Heinzel spoke of a “not an easy year”: the decline in demand was massive. In addition, there was a fall in the price of all types of paper and pulp, coupled with high costs for waste paper, wood and energy.
The group operates five locations and produces market pulp, packaging paper and magazine paper in Austria, Germany and Estonia and trades pulp, paper, waste paper and packaging solutions worldwide. A shutdown of the German subsidiary Raubling with 165 employees is being considered; negotiations are currently underway with the works council. The result for 2023 already includes an extraordinary write-down of assets.
