Pmore vigilant than ever with regard to the transalpine organizers of the 2026 Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will have the opportunity to judge on site the commitment of the parties to the accelerated implementation of preparations and this, while the two-year countdown was recently activated.

Above all, from this Tuesday and until Friday February 23, 2024, the Olympic institution will be able to measure – through the 2026 Olympic Coordination Commission – the ambition of the Italian authorities to ensure the redevelopment of the historic Cortina d’Ampezzo track where the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events are to be held.

Fact, despite the reluctance expressed over the months and the recommendation to establish said tests outside Italythe Games Organizing Committee held firm, accompanied and supported in this approach by the government of Giorgia Meloni keen to preserve the national character of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games.

Also, the resumption of construction work on the Cortina d’Ampezzo Sliding Center should make it possible to illustrate this unfailing determination, even if this recovery generates increased tensions at the local level as the Italian media reported.

As proof, this Monday, February 19, a demonstration bringing together environmentalist associations and residents was held near the site secured by a strong presence of carabinieri and demarcated by large orange ribbons signifying the ban on access to the site. Beyond the cost of the project estimated at 81.6 million euros excluding taxes, opponents have been pointing out for months a high environmental cost in view of the planned felling of 500 trees.

For the organizers of the Games, however, the slightest hazard is no longer permitted because time is now running out to guarantee the construction and delivery of the site ahead of the global sporting event.

On this point, the company Pizzarottisingle candidate having submitted an offer to the Società Infrastrutture Milano Cortina 2026 SpA (SIMICO) to carry out the work – seems ready to take on the challenge of a complex project which must be completed in 625 days for the development of a 1,650 meter track comprising 16 turns and arranged with a drop of 110 meters.

The technical elements of the track must be completed by March 2025 in order to be able to carry out various tests essential to consider the establishment on site competitions during the Games.

The entire Sliding Center can then be delivered no later than November 2025, just a few months before the opening of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games.
