– When we arrive, there is a heavy fire in the basement and smoke developing in the entire staircase and in one of the apartments, says operations manager at North Jutland’s emergency department Dennis Hovn.
– There were people who had sought refuge out on their balconies because they couldn’t get out because of the smoke in the hallway, he explains.
The trapped residents had to be rescued with a ladder, while the firemen simultaneously set about extinguishing the fire.
When all the residents on the balconies had been brought to safety, the emergency services examined the apartments where they had not had contact with any residents.
– And no one has been found there, emphasizes the task leader.
Several residents had to be sent to the hospital to be checked for smoke poisoning.
Emergency services extinguished the fire in the basement before it could spread to any of the apartments. In one of the apartments, however, a lot of smoke could be detected, but this was due to a resident not being able to close the door when she tried in vain to get out of the building via the staircase.
– For a short time we thought there was a fire both in the basement and on the second floor, but there was not, says Dennis Hovn.
Four police patrols were present
The North Jutland Police were also present at the address with as many as four patrols.
According to chief of duty at North Jutland Police Ole Buus, the police are not ruling anything out in relation to the cause of the fire. However, he cannot say more on Sunday evening, shortly after the police had arrived at the address.
– There is a heavy fire up there, he said.
– We are in the process of evacuating the property, he added.
The police received the report at 9:33 p.m.
