Heavy round of Russian missiles hits locations across Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine received a heavy round of Russian missile strikes Monday morning, hitting near the front lines in the east as well as the center and west of the country. One person was killed and at least 30 were injured.

The highest death toll was recorded in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where a woman was killed in a missile attack outside the city of Krivoy Rog and 24 people were injured in another once morest the city of Novomoskovsk. In Krivoy Rog itself, more than 20 houses and a shopping center were damaged by a missile attack, according to regional governor Serhii Lysak.

At least four missiles hit Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, leaving one injured, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov also reported two injuries and two people trapped under rubble following an attack in the town of Zmiiv.

In Zaporizhzhia, a major city along the Dnieper River, two people were wounded in a missile attack on a residential district, regional governor Yurii Malashko said.

In the past 24 hours, Russian troops carried out 131 artillery strikes on the Kherson region, killing two people and wounding five, according to the governor, Oleksandr Prokudin.

The city of Kherson and the surrounding region have come under continued attacks since Russian forces withdrew from the city to the eastern side of the Dnieper River in autumn 2022.

At least six explosions rocked the central Khmelnytskyi region on Monday, although there were no immediate details on casualties or damage.

The Ukrainian military said on Monday that Russian forces had tried unsuccessfully to advance over the past day in several locations, including around Lyman in the Kharkiv region and in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Authorities in the Khmelnytskyi region said at least six explosions had been heard during the morning missile attack, although no damage or casualties were initially reported.

Kiev Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said a man who was injured in a missile attack on January 2 died in a kyiv hospital on Monday. Another man wounded in that same attack died on Monday in Kharkiv, according to Syniehubov.
