Heavy rains exacerbate the suffering of displaced people in eastern Sudan

Sudan – Heavy rains have exacerbated the suffering of displaced people in shelters in eastern Sudan, especially in the cities of Gedaref, Kassala and New Halfa.

The rainwater that fell yesterday, Friday, flooded the streets and squares of Kassala, according to eyewitnesses.

Witnesses said that rainwater flooded the shelters, surrounding the tents of the displaced and others sleeping on the ground.

The Kassala Youth Emergency Room warned of a catastrophic situation in some shelters, with difficulties in draining rainwater.

She appealed to the government and all international and local organizations to contribute to pumping rainwater from 3 shelters in the city, and to provide children’s clothes and heating devices.

She pointed out the difficulty of providing basic needs such as food and drinking water in shelters due to heavy rains.

The city of Gedaref witnessed heavy rains, which exacerbated the suffering of the displaced, who are suffering from a severe shortage of shelter, blankets and food.

Displaced people fear that heavy rains will lead to environmental degradation and the spread of diseases.

For its part, the Middle Call Initiative said that shelters are flooding in the city of New Halfa, Kassala, due to the continued heavy rainfall.

She explained that rainwater flooded the shelters that house displaced families, revealing unbearable human suffering.

She continued: “The rains that fell in the region left no room for comfort or hope, as families were surrounded by water, struggling to survive.”

She pointed out that the city streets had turned into “rivers” due to rainwater that seeped into the shelter tents and flooded the basic belongings of the displaced.

She warned of a danger threatening the lives of children, women and the elderly, if the rains continue to fall amid the suffering experienced by the displaced.

The initiative called for solidarity, extending a helping hand and providing relief aid to the displaced.

For its part, the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur said that the displaced people are suffering in Zamzam camp in El Fasher due to heavy rains.

She added: “The displaced found themselves trapped by the heavy rains that fell on Thursday and swept through the places where they were staying.”

The rains coincide with the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has left about 15,000 dead and about 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.

On July 10, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned of heavy rains that would affect millions of displaced people in Sudan.

Annually, rain falls in Sudan from the beginning of June until October.
