Heavy rains flooded several streets in New York overnight from Thursday to Friday. Part of the underground network was closed due to rains and airports were also affected. The authorities are calling on residents to exercise extreme caution.

Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for New York, Long Island and the Hudson Valley “due to the heavy rainfall we are currently experiencing,” she wrote on X, the old Twitter .

Images of vehicles struggling to navigate the body of water are circulating on social media and local media outlets. In some places, the water rose to the height of car windows, completely blocking them.

Several major subway stations are entirely or partially underwater, preventing certain central lines from being served, mainly in the Brooklyn district. “We remain committed to getting the water out as quickly as possible,” New York Metro reports on X.

At La Guardia Airport, access to Terminal A is currently closed.

According to Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who lives in New York, between 5 and 12 centimeters of rain fell in the neighborhoods of Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. Between 2.5 and 7 centimeters of additional precipitation are expected in these same areas.
