Since the Covid-19 vaccination campaigns, cases of menstrual disorders have been reported to pharmacovigilance centers. These cases were the subject of analyzes by public health authorities, who have just published at the end of January 2024 the results of a study on the risk of heavy menstrual bleeding following vaccination once morest Covid-19. Results.
Anti-Covid vaccines and menstrual cycle
Rapid development mRNA vaccines once morest Covid-19 in the midst of a pandemic had aroused concern among the French regarding the possible adverse effects of vaccines. As with every health product, vaccine or medication, once marketed, monitoring continues and makes it possible to ensure the effectiveness of the product, but also to identify less frequent side effects. As part of the national vaccination campaign once morest Covid-19, the ANSM has set up a reinforced vaccine surveillance system, in conjunction with the European Medicines Agency.
From the first vaccination campaigns, several adverse effects of mRNA vaccines once morest Covid-19 have been highlighted, in particular cardiovascular effects, such as myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle). Other effects identified include menstrual cycle disorders :
a late period; the absence of rules; abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding.
These effects are declared to pharmacovigilance centers, by the people concerned themselves or by health professionals (doctors, midwives, pharmacists, etc.). Once declared, these effects are analyzed and their link with vaccination assessed.

Heavy menstrual bleeding requiring hospitalization
At the end of January 2024, the ANSM published an EPI-PHARE study intended to evaluate the link between vaccines once morest Covid-19 and one of the menstrual disorders identified, the occurrence of heavy menstrual bleeding. The researchers focused on women aged 15 to 50, who required hospital treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding following vaccination once morest Covid-19 between May 2021 and August 2022. In total, the data was collected among 4,610 women, with an average age of 39.3 years.
To know ! Data had previously been published to confirm the link between menstrual disorders and vaccination, with the effect of vaccines generally limited to a single menstrual cycle
Of all the women in the study, 8% of vaccinated women and 4% of unvaccinated women had to receive a blood transfusion, given the significant blood loss. In the month following their admission to hospital, 2 women died, 1 vaccinated and the other unvaccinated. The data collected showed that primary vaccination with an mRNA vaccine (one of the first two doses of vaccine) was associated with a 20% increase in the risk of heavy menstrual bleeding requiring hospital treatment. Bleeding occurred between 1 and 3 months following vaccination.

A link only with primary vaccination
On the other hand, mRNA vaccines once morest Covid-19 were not associated with an increased risk of heavy menstrual bleeding:
Beyond three months following the primary vaccination; After a booster dose.
The identification of this adverse effect has already been the subject of a modification to the instructions for the vaccines concerned in October 2022.
Abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding is considered at European level to be an adverse effect of mRNA vaccines once morest Covid-19. The study published by the ANSM confirms this risk for bleeding requiring hospital treatment, with an increase in risk of around 20%. A side effect to be aware of for women vaccinating for the first time once morest Covid-19.
To know ! Patients can self-report a potential side effect of a treatment or health product. To do this, they can go to the portal for reporting adverse health events: https://signalement.social-sante.gouv.fr/
