An unlikely situation in this region. Forecast.

Unusual context

If you found the day hot in greater Montreal, know that it was even hotter in this region of Quebec. Northern and northwestern areas of the province experienced abnormal highs, one of which broke an all-time heat record. It has never been so hot in Kuujjuaq. The hot spot on July 4, 2023: Waskaganish. A favorable atmospheric context allowed the mercury to reach an unprecedented level at these latitudes, while two depressions positioned over Hudson Bay literally sucked the hot, dry air north.

never so hot

The mercury reached 35°C in Waskaganish on Tuesday. Kuujjuaq broke an all-time record with a high of 34.3°C. The old mark dated June 24, 1999 with 33.1°C. The day was also very hot in Chibougamau and Val-d’Or with temperatures over 30°C.

Bad news

This is bad news for these regions since the situation does nothing to reduce the risk of fire. Northern Quebec, an area particularly affected by forest fires, is experiencing an extremely dry season. The warm temperatures and lack of rainfall are a real spark plug. In most of these sectors, the risk remains extreme. During the next few days, thunderstorms might get in the way.
