(Brussels, Seoul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Jong-un, Correspondent Kim Yeon-sook = Countries are taking emergency response as the heatwave that has continued for several days centered on southwestern Europe has resulted in a series of deaths and wildfires.

According to foreign media such as Archyde.com, AFP and US CNN on the 16th (local time), the death toll in excess is rapidly increasing in Spain and Portugal as the recent heatwave with the highest temperature exceeding 40 degrees Celsius continues.

Excess deaths are additional deaths that exceed the number of deaths ordinarily expected to occur at a given time.

Spain’s Ministry of Health said the number of excess deaths from 10 to 14 July stood at 237. The heat wave continues and the death toll is expected to rise.

Spain already recorded 829 excess deaths in June.

Portugal also recorded an excess of 238 deaths from the 7th to the 13th, and local authorities said it may be due to the heat wave. Most of the deaths were elderly people with underlying medical conditions.

The sweltering heat has led to wildfires. Thousands of people in nearby areas were evacuated, and additional casualties occurred, including the death of a firefighter in the process of extinguishing the wildfire.

In Portugal, 17 wildfires broke out across the country, and more than 1,000 firefighters were deployed. More than 160 residents were injured in the fire and hundreds were evacuated.

In Pozcoa, near the border with Spain, a fire engine working on an extinguisher crashed, killing the pilot.

By mid-June this year, a total of 39,550 ha was burned by forest fires in Portugal. This is more than three times the same period last year.

More than 3,000 people have been evacuated from a massive wildfire near Mijas in southern Spain, local authorities said.

The western Estremadura and central Castille and Leon regions were also engulfed in flames. The fires have destroyed more than 18,500 acres of forest so far, and threatened historic buildings, including 16th-century monasteries, as well as national parks.

In the Gironde region of southwestern France, where a recent wildfire has occurred, more than 1,000 firefighters have been deployed to extinguish the fire, but the strong wind is making it difficult to extinguish it.

Fires that started near the area’s Pilasagou (Dündupila) and Randy Rance have so far burned 18,000 acres. 11,300 residents were also forced to flee.

The UK is no exception to the heat wave.

The UK Meteorological Agency has predicted that temperatures will exceed 40 degrees Celsius for the first time in the UK next week. The temperature on the 18th and 20th is expected to exceed the 2019 high of 38.7 degrees Celsius.

The Transport for London (TfL) has advised residents to avoid public transport in London unless it is a ‘must have’. TfL has decided to temporarily reduce the operating speed of subways and railroads for safety, and urged passengers to carry drinking water at all times.

In addition, considering that heat waves can damage wires and signal equipment, we decided to strengthen the inspection.
