Hundreds of thousands of fish died in the Song May reservoir in Dong Nai, Vietnam. The mass deaths occurred due to a heat wave and were exacerbated by poor lake management.
“All the fish in Song May reservoir died because of lack of water,” said Nghia, a local resident.
This phenomenon also disturbs people’s comfort because dead fish emit an unpleasant odor.
According to reports, the area has not seen rain for weeks. As a result, there is too little water in the reservoir so that fish and other lake animals cannot survive.
The Tuoi Tre newspaper reported that the company responsible for managing the lake previously tried to carry out dredging in early 2024. They did this to remove mud that was considered too high at the bottom of the lake.
During the dredging period, the water in the lake is thrown away or channeled to other places. Unfortunately, following the work, the rain didn’t fall and the lake didn’t fill up once more.

“Due to the unrelenting heat wave, water levels are dropping further and fish are dying en masse,” the newspaper reported.
Authorities are investigating the incident while working to remove the dead fish quickly.
According to the weather agency, temperatures in Dong Nai province, located 100 kilometers west of Ho Chi Minh City, reached around 40 degrees Celsius in April. It broke the record for the highest temperature recorded in 1998.
