Heatwave alert in Spain forecasting temperatures of 44 degrees

Madrid.- The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a special warning regarding adverse weather phenomena, a type of alert that serves to indicate that the weather can affect the safety of people and material assets directly or indirectly.

The warning consists of fixed information that includes the start and end date, the affected areas and the level of severity, among other data. In this case, the alert that has been activated this Thursday and that will last until Saturday is due to the high temperatures that will be left by a mass of warm air that has moved towards the peninsula from Africa.

This first heat wave of the summer, which will leave highs of up to 44 degrees, will affect some areas of the country more than others. In some regions, a yellow alert has been activated and in others, an orange alert. But what do these values ​​mean? Yellow means that there is no risk for the general population, although there is for some specific activities. In this case, Aemet recommends that citizens pay attention to the weather forecast and avoid outdoor activities during the central hours of the day. On the other hand, the orange warning indicates that there is a significant meteorological risk with a certain degree of danger for usual activities. In this case, the meteorologists recommend taking precautions, especially in usual and outdoor activities.

This episode of high temperatures will affect almost the entire country. However, the most affected areas will be the southern half and the northeastern quadrant of the Peninsula, where temperatures are expected to exceed 38 degrees, reaching 42 degrees in areas of the valleys of the Guadiana, the Tajo and the Ebro; and even 44 degrees in the Guadalquivir Valley.

The peak days of the heat wave are Thursday and Friday, when temperatures above 40 degrees are likely to be more widespread. In fact, during this day the regions on alert are Andalusia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Castile and Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, the Community of Madrid, the Foral Community of Navarre, the Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community.

On Friday, almost the entire peninsula will be affected, as will the Balearic Islands. It will be the day of greatest risk, as the Aemet map of active warnings will be orange. During this day, it will be vital to take extreme precautions to avoid the negative consequences for health of extreme temperatures.

Aemet reports that from Saturday onwards, a cooler Atlantic air mass is likely to lead to a moderate drop in temperatures on the Atlantic side of the peninsula, although temperatures will reach 38 degrees in the southern half of the peninsula and could reach 40 degrees in the Guadalquivir valley.

In the Ebro valley, there is high uncertainty, with the most likely scenario being that the north wind will blow, so the temperature drop in the upper Ebro would be significant, although in the middle and lower Ebro, temperatures could still reach 40 degrees, where there is a possibility of storms in the afternoon, which would cause a sharp drop in temperatures. As for the Mediterranean side, Saturday is the peak day of the heat wave in the area, as the westerly wind will raise temperatures to reach 44 degrees.

However, on Sunday, the drop in temperature, which began on Saturday on the Atlantic side, is expected to spread to the rest of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
