Britain’s Heathrow Airport has decided to limit the number of passengers traveling from it to 100,000 people per day, 4,000 fewer than the expected daily number, a day following dozens of flights were cancelled.
Heathrow, like other British and European airports that have been mired in chaos for months due to flight cancellations, other delays, long queues and problems with baggage delivery, is struggling to accommodate the resumption of demand, mainly due to a shortage of staff.
Heathrow general manager John Holland-Kaye said in a statement: “An average of approximately 1,500 tickets out of the 4,000 (cancelled) tickets were sold per day, so we are asking our affiliate companies to stop selling tickets for the summer to mitigate the impact on passengers.”
He pointed out that some important sections of the airport suffer from a significant shortage of staff, “especially the staff on the ground who are employed by airlines” to manage and handle baggage registration.
