Heat waves, a public health concern in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region

Drought intensifies, plants face water shortages, forests close, and humans are in trouble. Heatwaves or extreme heat can have a significant impact on the health of each of us, especially the most vulnerable (older people, lonely people, disabled people, unstable or homeless people, people with pre-existing conditions, pregnant women, young children, outdoor people). Health can be affected from the first day in the heat.

Like many in France, people in the Var are currently experiencing difficult nights as a heat wave prevents nighttime temperatures from falling. Experts from the National Institute of Sleep and Alertness confirm that moderate daytime temperatures are enough to cause discomfort at night, and they recommend keeping bedroom temperatures below 20°C. Nighttime cooling helps our bodies prepare for sleep. When temperatures are too high, this process is disrupted, causing restlessness and a reduction in deep sleep and REM stages.

kidney and cardiovascular problems

“In the summer of 2022, heatwaves led to 200,000 emergency room visits, a 3.4% increase in activity and costs of €54 million. Heatwaves can cause additional nausea, discomfort and fever, as well as depressive states and mood disorders .

Exposure to high temperatures can also cause cardiovascular, respiratory and psychiatric damage (effects that can last three to 10 days after exposure). This sometimes results in death. In terms of implications for population health, it is important to note that observed incidence trends do not predict mortality trends.

Heatwave-related morbidity is also “documented”, notably through national summaries published at the end of each heat peak, and through indicators such as iCanicule, which monitors heat stroke, dehydration and hyponatremia (hyponatremia). ) level of intervention.

Tips for staying cool

You must be prepared before the first signs of physical pain appear, even if they seem trivial. Therefore, the ARS recommends following the following tips: Stay cool (at home or in a cool place); Drink water often and do not wait until you are thirsty; Wet your body (mist, regular showers, etc.); During the day, close blinds exposed to sunlight and windows, open them as much as possible to promote air circulation in the evening and night after the temperature drops; avoid going out and strenuous physical activity during the hottest hours; eat fresh, balanced, and sufficient amounts; make sure your medicines are stored properly (avoid sunlight and high temperatures); Avoid alcohol; get messages from your loved ones and those who are most vulnerable. If you feel unwell, please call 15.

Things are not expected to get better on Thursday. The minimum nighttime temperature in the Var will remain around 24°C. A high temperature peak is expected on Thursday, with temperatures near the Luc Plain on the Waal River reaching around 40°C. The ocean effect weakens and temperatures in Toulon are expected to reach 34°C.
