According to the Association of the Austrian Boiler and Heating Industry (VÖK), the overall demand for climate-friendly heating systems remains high. In the first half of 2023, the interest group for heat pumps recorded an increase in sales of 40 percent to 28,100 units. Air source heat pumps in particular are very popular. Gas appliances, on the other hand, were sold at 12,600 units, 30 percent fewer than in the same period of the previous year.
Wood boilers might not keep the all-time high of the previous year, but with a minus of 37 percent to 9000 pieces, they were above the high level of 2021. According to the association, the strongly fluctuating pellet prices led to a decline in pellet heating systems of more than 50 percent. Log boilers with forced draft burners experienced a comeback with an increase of 80 percent.
The domestic manufacturers are currently having problems with the discussion in Germany, where customers are so unsettled by the unclear political guidelines that they are waiting for the time being, the VÖK reports. In Austria, the Renewable Heat Act is also on hold. It is intended to regulate the gradual switch from fossil heating to renewable alternatives. From 2025, the mandatory exchange of particularly old coal and oil heating systems will begin. By 2035 or 2040, all fossil heating (oil, gas, coal) should ultimately be replaced. The proPellets association in particular is pushing hard for the law to be passed.
“In normal years, high energy prices and generous funding incentives were a key market driver,” according to the VÖK: “The market turmoil of the past few years has triggered a real boom in demand that might not be served immediately due to the disrupted supply chains. As soon as the manufacturers were able to deliver once more, Installers and customers bought and stored systems in the previous year that only have to be installed this year. We only expect the market situation to normalize once these installations have been completed.”
