Heat is expected to increase in Venezuela during August and September

  • The perception of heat will increase due to the absence of precipitation for the next few days

Meteorologist Luis Vargas reported on August 19 through his X account (Twitter) that a progressive increase in temperatures is expected in Venezuela, which is usual during this time of year.

Vargas said that the low probability of precipitation will mean that favourable conditions for heat will persist. The specialist also noted that, for now, estimates of high temperatures suggest values that are not “as extreme as those of last year, in the case of Venezuela.”

In 2023, residents of several regions of Venezuela reported an increase in the perception of heat during August and SeptemberThe increase in temperature in some states of the country was recorded mainly in areas where rainfall has not been frequent.

Ángel Graterol Briceño, manager of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (INAMEH), explained at the time that this phenomenon is caused by solar declination or direct exposure of the sun’s rays to the national territory.

What is solar declination?

Solar declination is the angle between the Earth’s equatorial plane and the straight line connecting the center of the Earth with the center of the Sun.

Briceño stressed that these conditions have two moments of greatest intensity in Venezuela: one in April and another starting on August 20. During these dates, temperatures can rise between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius above what is considered normal.

The representative of the institution mentioned, in a radio interview published on August 28that the feeling of heat could last until September.

Solar decline in Venezuela

Luis Vargas highlighted on August 19 that solar decline is already very close to the continental area of Venezuela. He explained that it will strike Cabo San Román (Falcón) perpendicularly and progressively the sun’s rays will affect the national territory perpendicularly in a north-south direction, which will influence a greater perception of heat.

“Let us remember that (the solar decline) will continue to ‘sweep’ progressively until it reaches the southernmost point of our country, the source of the Ararí River, Amazonas state, on September 21,” Vargas wrote on his X account.

In general, solar declination is an important factor affecting Venezuela’s climate. During the summer months, when solar declination is greatest, temperatures are higher and there are more sunny days.

According to meteorology expert Luis Vargas, during the increase in the sensation of heat during 2023, the Atlantic experienced an increase in temperatures above the usual level, which has contributed to a greater perception of these conditions by people.

On the other hand, in 2023, international organizations warned about heat waves that were recorded in various parts of the world, including Europe and Latin America.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also warned that climate change is making people heat waves become more frequent and intense, so health experts called on countries to be prepared for high temperatures and take measures to protect those most affected.

In addition, according to the WHO, extreme heat can cause exhaustion, heat stroke and other symptoms.

“People most vulnerable to extreme heat are children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and people who work outdoors,” the organization said.
