2022 was the year of records in Europe: the previous year was characterized by high temperatures, drought and retreating glaciers. That emerges from the report of the European climate observation service Copernicus, which was published yesterday.
Average temperatures in Europe have already risen by 2.2 degrees compared to the pre-industrial era. That is almost twice as fast as the global increase. The entire past year was therefore the second warmest since records began. In the previous year, which was characterized by widespread drought and heat, two thirds of European rivers had below-average water levels and the Alpine glaciers lost five cubic kilometers of ice.
According to C3S Vice Director Samantha Burgess, 2023 will once more be a difficult situation, at least for parts of the continent. The soils in southern Europe are still “incredibly” dry. This will have consequences if there is no “significant precipitation” in spring.
The ongoing drought is already having an effect on the growing season. Declining crop yields are therefore “probable”.
