DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza (AP) — Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip killed more than a dozen people overnight, hospital and local officials said Thursday, as health workers wrapped up the second phase of an emergency polio vaccination campaign designed to prevent a large-scale outbreak in the territory.
The vaccination campaign was launched after the first case of polio in the Palestinian enclave in 25 years was confirmed, in a 10-month-old boy who now has a paralyzed leg.
The nine-day initiative, organized by the United Nations health agency, began last Sunday in central Gaza and aims to vaccinate 640,000 children under the age of 10, an ambitious effort during a devastating war that has destroyed the territory’s health system and much of its infrastructure.
The second phase of vaccinations, which is being carried out in the southern part of the country, was in its final day yesterday, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, which said it would then move to the northern region and end tomorrow.
The ministry has set up dozens of clinics to administer the drug to children in the southern cities of Khan Yunis and Rafah.
Israel, for its part, continued its military offensive.
In the Nuseirat urban refugee camp in central Gaza, Al-Awda hospital said it received the bodies of nine people killed in two separate airstrikes.
An operation that hit a residential building in the early hours of the morning claimed the lives of four people and left at least 10 injured, the center said.
In the other Israeli attack, five people were killed in a house in the western part of Nuseirat.
Meanwhile, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, the largest hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah, reported that a woman and two children were killed in another attack on a house in the Bureij urban refugee camp early in the morning.
In the north of the enclave, an attack on a school converted into a shelter for displaced people in Jabaliya left at least four dead and two dozen wounded, according to the Gaza Civil Defense, which is dependent on the Hamas government.
The Israeli military said it attacked a Hamas command post set up in a former school compound.
