Heart-friendly: Galaxy Watch to warn users about irregular heart rhythms soon

2023-05-08 14:48:00

The Galaxy Watch 4 and 5 watches are the most complete in the world when it comes to health monitoring and, soon, they will gain a new function: Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN). The news was announced today by Vice President and Team Leader Digital Health, MX Business at Samsung Electronics, Hon Pak.

We are excited to announce that the Irregular Heart Rhythm Report, designed to help millions of people around the world who may not be aware of a potential cardiac risk, has been cleared by the FDA.

According to the executive, the new function will allow the watches to monitor the heart rate of users 24 hours a day using the sensor used to perform an electrocardiogram. Thus, the Galaxy Watch will send a notification when irregular rhythm is detected in the heart.

This is yet another example of how Samsung prioritizes proactive security solutions and allows users to receive a more holistic understanding of their cardiovascular and overall health.

The novelty will only be released now as it requires approval by regulatory bodies, which was granted by the FDA in May 2023. Upon receiving the notification, the user must perform an electrocardiogram on the watch to obtain more details regarding their heart condition with greater accuracy .

Irregular Heart Rate Notification can be enabled through the Samsung Health Monitor app, which is already used to store heart rate data and calibrate these devices.

Samsung details that the feature will be available for the following watches:

  • Galaxy Watch 4;
  • Galaxy Watch 4 Classic;
  • Galaxy Watch 5;
  • Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

At the moment, the South Korean has not detailed when the function will be launched, but we believe that it will reach compatible watches in 2023 through a software update and for the Samsung Health Monitor application.
