A study by the American Cancer Society shows that among nearly 40% of new cancer cases in people over 30 in the United States, regarding half of the deaths might be avoided through simple changes in lifestyle habits.

For example, 18 major risk factors have been identified for approximately 30 types of cancer, including smoking, being overweight, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, diet and infections.

“These risk factors will affect the genetic code in our cell nuclei and tell our cells: ‘Divide yourself, but not in the right way,'” family physician Dr. Marie-Pier Villemure explained in an interview with LCN on Friday.

Good lifestyle habits can also help cancer patients tolerate treatment better and recover faster, she said.

She recalls that there was no age limit for starting a healthy lifestyle.

“Once we change our lifestyle habits, the beneficial effects can be felt in the first hours, first days, and soon we can undo the effects of years of bad habits,” the doctor said.

“The first tip is to take small steps, it’s not important to eat and drink big. There is no need to become a super athlete overnight,” Dr. Villemure emphasizes.
