Suggestion for moderation: Women are special! In every respect, but especially with regard to health. Because the female body has special needs in different phases of life. That is why, many years ago, on May 28th, Women’s Health Day was established. Today it is regarding drawing attention to the importance of mental and physical women’s health. Diet is also an important factor. Mario Hattwig reports.
Narrator: Height, physique, the ratio of fat to muscle mass, the internal organs and the complex hormonal balance. Women’s bodies are fundamentally different than men’s. In addition, women have very different requirements depending on their phase of life, according to the doctor and nutritionist Dr. Marie Ahluwalia.
Original sound 1 (Dr. Marie Ahluwalia, 26 sec.): “It starts in puberty; when girls get their period for the first time, the whole hormone balance changes. And that means that we too need more iron. Or, for example, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, the need for many micronutrients is increased, such as folic acid. But also the supply of iodine, omega 3, calcium and vitamin B12 must be taken into account.”
Speaker: And even later, during the menopause, often with symptoms such as hot flashes, hair loss and mood swings, a good supply of nutrients is important.
Original sound 2 (Dr. Marie Ahluwalia, 31 sec.): “A good supply of nutrients also supports health here, and studies show that well-being can also be positively influenced if you consider that this change with the symptoms can take up to ten years, it is absolutely important to deal with it.You might think directly of calcium and vitamin D for bone maintenance, for example, but there are also a number of plants that are traditional due to their composition have always been used at this stage.”
Speaker: In principle, women should take in the necessary micronutrients through a varied and balanced diet. However, studies show that there are always gaps in supply.
Original sound 3 (Dr. Marie Ahluwalia, 24 sec.): “That means the nutrients that we eat through our diet are sometimes not enough to cover our daily needs, and that’s especially true for women. Or especially then, if for whatever reason we exclude certain foods, for example in the case of vegans, it can help to balance this out with dietary supplements.”
Speaker: You can get advice from a nutritionist or a doctor. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should definitely do this. In general, however, the following applies: no matter what phase of life a woman is in, exercise is the be-all and end-all, preferably outdoors in some sunshine, so that the body can produce vitamin D and release endorphins.
Moderation suggestion: The body needs micronutrients. How much depends on your biological sex and, of course, on your own situation in life. Tables with the corresponding recommendations and a lot more information can be found online at nahrungsergaenzmittel.org.
