Ice Tea: Beware of the Sugar Trap!

Whether peach-flavored or lemon-flavoured, iced tea has been a classic soft drink on warm days for years. But especially finished products in bottles or in tetra packs – drunk in large quantities – become a sugar trap. “Some varieties contain up to 20 sugar cubes per liter,” says Magdeburg nutritionist Dr. Carl Meissner. He therefore generally advises once morest off-the-shelf versions.

The aromas are also mostly artificial, the proportion of tea and fruit is minimal. Incidentally, instant ice tea is particularly special: the powder consists mainly of sugar and glucose and only regarding 1.5 percent black tea extract and less than one percent fruit.

Make healthy iced tea yourself: The basic recipe

Iced tea is usually made from black or green tea. The tea should be dosed higher and only brew briefly.

  • 4-5 bags of black tea
  • 300ml of water
  • ice cubes
  • Fruit according to season and taste
  • The black tea is boiled with approx. 300 milliliters of water. Leave for a maximum of three minutes. Then pour the hot tea into a container with two-thirds of ice cubes. The rapid cooling prevents the tea from tasting bitter followingwards, and it also preserves the taste of the tea better.
  • As too many ice cubes water down the tea, you can alternatively freeze part of the tea. Add lemon slices or peach pieces to taste.
  • If it is particularly hot, the fruit can also be used frozen.
  • Iced tea will keep in the fridge for two to three days.
  • If you want to do without the caffeine in black tea, you can also make the recipe with fruit or herbal teas and vary different types of fruit.

Already knew? – The iced tea has a day of honor

June 10th is International Iced Tea Day. The idea for the holiday comes from the USA. The “National Iced Tea Day” is celebrated here every year. Ice tea was first officially mentioned during the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. The English tea trader Richard Blechynden is said to have offered his guests chilled black tea due to the high temperatures. Whether it tasted like peaches or lemons back then is not known.

When is lemonade unhealthy?

Not everyone likes pure water without any taste. If you have to bring yourself to drink, it will be difficult to get to the recommended daily amount of at least one and a half liters. Many then reach for lemonades, juices and the like. However, enormous amounts of sugar can also be hidden in finished fruit lemonades or flavored water. “On the ingredient list, they’re often disguised as glucose, fructose, or syrup,” says nutritionist Dr. Carl Meissner.

Interesting: The word “lemonade” is derived from the Italian “limonata”. The main ingredient was the lemon (Italian: limone). It was originally a simple drink made from water with a dash of lemon juice. In the meantime, there are hardly any limits to the variety of tastes here either. Nutritionist Dr. Carl Meißner presents a recipe with cucumber and lemon balm.

  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 tablespoon agave syrup
  • ½ bunch of mint or lemon balm
  • ½ bunch nettle
  • ½ lemon
  • ½ lime
  • 1l mineral water
  • Put half a cucumber, mint and nettle (keep a few leaves), as well as ¼ lemon and ¼ lime in a blender and chop well.
  • Press everything through a fine sieve so that the juice remains.
  • Pour the juice and syrup into a carafe and fill up with mineral water.
  • Add the remaining mint and nettle leaves, as well as the remaining cucumber, lemon and lime.
  • Let the whole thing sit in the fridge for regarding an hour and then serve.
