Compulsory healthcare insurance recorded a deficit of 1.5 billion francs in 2022, according to Santésuisse. Premiums fell by 0.2% per insured while costs increased by 2.6%.
Combined with the difficult stock market situation, this is weighing on the reserves of health insurers, Santésuisse wrote in a press release on Tuesday. In 2022, reserves are expected to fall well below 10 billion francs.
Last September, the umbrella of insurers indicated that reserves for 2022 should still amount to around 8 billion. The amount prescribed by law is 6.4 billion francs.
With an increase of 5.3% per insured person, costs in the pharmacy sector recorded above-average growth. Medicines paid for via health insurance premiums totaled CHF 9 billion and thus accounted for almost a quarter of the total costs of basic insurance.
