At Florida State University’s Turnbull Conference Center last week, healthcare executive Nick Westfall challenged industry leaders to abandon the search for fleeting solutions and embrace constant evolution in the face of ever-changing healthcare demands. Westfall, chairman and CEO of VITAS Healthcare, delivered the keynote address at the 2025 Business of Healthcare Summit.
“While the system is broken, there’s always this theme, ‘Let’s go about and fix it,’” Westfall stated. “I don’t like that comment, as fixing it implies that there’s an end to it. It’s going to constantly evolve, and the needs of our communities constantly evolve. We need to embrace that.”
Westfall’s message resonated with the 260 attendees,including healthcare executives,government officials,nonprofit leaders,and university faculty and students. The summit served as an extension of the university’s FSU Health initiative, tackling critical issues facing the U.S. healthcare system.

Nick Westfall: Thank you for having me. The healthcare landscape is dynamic. Technology, patient needs, and societal structures shift constantly. Focusing on ‘fixing’ the system implies a static solution, which is unrealistic.We need to cultivate a culture of adaptation and foresight,always anticipating and responding to change.
VITAS and the Path Forward
archyde: VITAS Healthcare has been at the forefront of end-of-life care for decades. How is VITAS positioning itself to navigate these ongoing changes in the healthcare sector?
Nick Westfall: We are investing heavily in several key areas. First, we are expanding our telehealth capabilities to improve access to care, especially for patients in remote areas. Secondly, we are leveraging AI and data analytics to personalize care plans and improve outcomes. we are placing a strong emphasis on workforce advancement, ensuring we have the skilled professionals needed to meet the growing demand for compassionate end-of-life care.
Archyde: Addressing provider shortages is a key concern, as discussed during the summit. What innovative strategies can be adopted to fill these gaps, notably in specialized areas like hospice care?
Nick Westfall: The solution is multifaceted. We need to create more training programs, offer competitive compensation and benefits, and foster a supportive work environment. Technology can also play a notable role, by automating some administrative tasks, enabling healthcare professionals to focus more on patient care.

Nick Westfall: our focus is on being a cost-effective solution and advocating for policy changes that improve access.We are constantly evaluating and refining our care models to maximize value, expanding into areas where access might currently be limited due to social or economic factors, and working closely with insurers alongside patient advocacy groups.
Archyde: Considering the rapid advancements in AI and automation, how do you foresee these technologies further transforming healthcare delivery, and what ethical considerations are paramount?
Nick Westfall: AI has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of healthcare, with early indications showing promise. We must prioritize data privacy, algorithmic transparency, and the ethical use of AI. It is essential that AI is used to augment the capabilities of healthcare professionals, not replace them. We must ensure that the human element of care, particularly compassion, is preserved and even enhanced through these technologies.
Archyde: looking ahead to the next five to ten years, what is one key trend or development in healthcare that you believe will have the most significant impact, and why?
Nick westfall: I believe the integration of personalized medicine, driven by advances in genomics and data-driven health management, will be incredibly impactful. this will enable providers to tailor treatment plans to individual patient needs, leading to more effective care and improved patient outcomes. However, we must ensure that this advancement is accessible and equitable across the population.
