Occitanie is particularly in the pre-epidemic phase of bronchiolitis among children under 2 years old at the end of October.

The lights are green for the flu when the “pre-epidemic” level is activated in Occitania for bronchiolitis, the rate of hospital visits for cases of Covid-19 is decreasing, the number of gastroenteritis is on the rise… We take stock of the health situation in the region.

Bronchiolitis is gaining ground among children under 2 years old

At the end of October 2023, bronchiolitis has pushed the regions of north-eastern France into an epidemic phase among children under 2 years old. Occitanie is in orange, in the pre-epidemic phase. “According to virological data from the University Hospitals of Nîmes, Montpellier and Toulouse, the circulation of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was increasing compared to the previous week,” warns Public Health France.

In hospital medicine, 119 visits were recorded compared to 94 the previous week, with a hospitalization rate of 26.1%. Added to this are the reports in private medicine. The increase was mainly observed at the Toulouse hospital center.

More and more cases of gastro and acute diarrhea

The activity level of gastroenteritis is considered “high” in Occitania, and the trend is increasing. “The incidence rate of cases of acute diarrhea seen in general medicine consultations was 81 per 100,000 inhabitants, an increase compared to previous weeks,” indicates Public Health France.

During the past week, “287 acts of all ages for this diagnosis were noted, i.e. 6.5% of the overall activity of the SOS Médecins associations”. As for hospital medicine, “397 visits for gastroenteritis were noted (including 200 patients aged under 5 years) or 1.3% of visits”.

Drop in Covid-19 cases

In its report from Thursday October 26, 2023, Public Health France notes a drop in the Covid-19 positivity rate for all ages in Occitanie. The decline has been constant since mid-September.

In private medicine, we are observing a reduction in suspicions or confirmed diagnoses of Covid-19, while calls for suspected Covid in hospital medicine are also falling. Note that 42% of visits to the emergency room for Covid-19 were followed by hospitalization.

According to data shared by Public Health France, we have observed a drop in the incidence rate in all departments of Occitanie in recent weeks. Here are the incidence rates for the week of October 16 to 22, compared to October 1 to 7:

The flu goes to sleep in Occitanie and France

Throughout mainland France, there were no epidemic developments during this last week of October with regard to influenza or influenza-like illnesses. In France as in Occitanie, “the share of activity for SOS Médecins influenza syndrome was stable and at its basic level for all ages combined (2.8%) and in all age groups”.
